2016
Civic Tech & Open-Data Challenge Friday 22 April 2016 · DVLA · Google for Startups
🏆 Winner · £5,000 grand pool + Most Impactful Civic Application

Team OPENLANE

project “TransitPulse”

A live transit optimizer that fused DVLA vehicle-licensing and local transport open APIs on Google Cloud, predicting congestion and re-routing buses in real time — with a civic dashboard a council officer could read at a glance.

“We didn’t build a nicer bus app. We showed a council how to move real vehicles differently, from data they already publish.”

Team RINGFREE

project “HelloDesk”

A browser-to-browser WebRTC support desk on BT and Alcatel-Lucent pre-release APIs — no phone number, no plugin. A customer clicks “call”, an agent answers in the browser, and an automated bot triages the queue while they wait.

“Working comms, in the browser, on APIs that weren’t even public yet — and it actually connected on stage. That was the whole game.”
